The GLP-1 Revolution: The Science, My Story, and the Truth About These Weight Loss Drugs
Introducing My New Book: The GLP-1 Revolution: The Science, My Story and the Truth About These Weight Loss Drugs
I'm thrilled to announce the release of my latest book, The GLP-1 Revolution! This project began as a deeply personal exploration into my own health journey using GLP-1 medications like Tirzepatide. I was fascinated—and at times overwhelmed—by the science, myths, and truths behind these revolutionary weight loss drugs. My curiosity inspired me to create the resource I wished I'd had from the start.
In The GLP-1 Revolution, you'll get a candid, easy-to-follow guide that blends straightforward science with relatable personal stories, including my own detailed 16-week journal and interviews with diverse individuals who've found support and success with GLP-1 treatments.
As a preview, here are two excerpts from my journal entries that kick off this deeply personal exploration:
The Unexpected Road to Health and Happiness...
Just as the pandemic turned our lives upside down, I got a job offer that took me from Boston all the way across the country to sunny Los Angeles. For reasons that are far too predictable to bore you with, I packed up my life and embraced the adventure.
If you’ve never been to California, the best way I can describe it is “Paradise with a Price Tag.” The weather is nearly perfect, the people are endlessly fascinating (and fun to gossip about), the shopping is incredible, and there’s always something beautiful to see or inspiring to do. But paradise isn’t free—living here can drain your wallet pretty quickly. For me, there was another cost, too: being separated from my family and friends by an entire country during the isolation of the pandemic.
I share this so you can understand the backdrop of my journey. Moving to California was amazing and transformative at that point in my life. The pandemic? Not so much—but we’ve all written and read enough blogs about that, so let’s skip ahead.
My true journey toward health and longevity started in California, and let me tell you, I was late to the party—I was already in my 50s! But better late than never, right? I dove headfirst into California’s outdoor lifestyle, enjoyed the endless healthy food options, and even explored the "woo woo" culture. Yes, I mean manifestation, crystals, astrology, meditation, and taking mental health seriously.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that I hadn’t been living authentically (to borrow a very Californian phrase) for the past 25+ years. One of my biggest revelations was that I wanted to maximize the time I have left on this earth, living fully and authentically. It was time to get my body and mind in sync with my new outlook.
After soaking up every bit of fun and freedom LA had to offer, I decided it was time to head back east. But California had spoiled me, and I knew I couldn’t handle another Boston winter. Instead, I opted for Florida, giving myself six months to figure out my next move.
Florida became my personal retreat. I walked four miles every day, ditched alcohol and sugar, swapped nightly TV for meditation, and truly focused on my goals. It was fantastic, but let’s be real—it wasn’t sustainable in the long term. I’m not independently wealthy, nor am I someone who thrives on endless planning. I’m an idea and action person at heart.
Even though the extreme regimen didn’t last, I noticed positive changes in my body and mindset. There was a catch, though—family history. My dad had Type 2 Diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. My mom battled dementia, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Sadly, I lost them both within the last three years. The weight of their health struggles (literally and figuratively) made my own journey feel even more urgent.
Just as I was grappling with this uphill battle against genetics and a lifetime of unhealthy habits, something unexpected and wonderful happened—I fell in love!
Love Is Fattening
I fell in love! It's amazing and transformative in so many ways. Sharing your life with someone who excites you, challenges you, and makes everything more fun was exactly what I'd dreamed of—and precisely what was on my manifestation list.
As a gay woman in my 50s, the dating pool felt simultaneously too large and too small. There were plenty of first dates, fewer second ones, and even fewer beyond that. Nothing seemed to click. I even revisited dating men just to be sure... but nope, definitely not for me.
Then, miraculously, we matched on Hinge and immediately hit it off. Of course, there were hurdles. She was living in Miami, while I had just decided to move to New Orleans. This meant lots of weekend visits and remote working sessions to squeeze in more time together.
I share all of this to explain my "happiness weight gain." You know the type—when you meet someone wonderful and suddenly there are new restaurants to try, cocktails to sip, and lazy days spent lounging around, getting to know each other.
One year later, settled in New Orleans—a city famous for its irresistible cuisine—I found myself regaining the pounds I'd worked so hard to lose. Falling in love and enjoying life turned out to be deliciously fattening. Don't get me wrong; finding your person is rare and wonderful, like discovering a needle in a haystack, and I wouldn’t trade my happiness for anything.
Still, I was faced with a new challenge: how to stay healthy while genuinely enjoying life—or even better, living my absolute best life. Was it possible to have both?
I decided to tackle the issue head-on. I'd been a fan of Dr. Mark Hyman’s podcast, so when he introduced his Functional Health program—a comprehensive, affordable blood and urine test—I decided to give it a shot. At $500, including a six-month follow-up, it felt reasonable given the typical cost of healthcare.
Unsurprisingly, my test results were mixed. Some areas showed excellent health, but others, not so much. My weight had clearly become an issue again, and it was affecting my blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar—all of which were elevated.
I quickly launched "Operation Healthy Living"...again. Unfortunately for me (but wonderfully for her), my partner is one of those lucky people who can eat steak, drink cocktails, snack on jellybeans before bed, and still have perfect test results. I love that for her—but I'm also a little jealous!
Reluctantly, I started blood pressure medication but stubbornly decided to tackle cholesterol through diet and lifestyle changes. However, progress was slow after a few months in New Orleans, my daughter's wedding, and a fabulous trip to Paris. My health markers improved slightly, but not enough. Balancing life’s pleasures, especially post-menopause, work, and life responsibilities, made it challenging to focus exclusively on wellness.
Frustrated and nearing my wit's end, I entered what I now affectionately call the "Tirzepatide Times."
