Guest Room Design – On Trend Yet Timeless

It all started with a floor plan that I drew for a friend who is moving to a new apartment in Boston.  She has always wanted to have a “proper” guest room.  She wants people to come and stay, feel welcome and pampered! I also love walking by a great guest room and knowing that someone could pop in at any time. A beautiful and functional guest room is the beginning and the end to every great visit.

Kim’s new guest room has an easy layout so it is really a matter of adding pieces that fit the space, are functional and capture the aesthetic she is looking for.

A few questions I asked Kim to get us headed in the right direction:

Q: Is there a color that you love and would like to feature in the guest room?

A: I want to incorporate some rose/blush.  I know it is trending and I want to use it but not be tired of it in a year.  Is there a way to make it more neutral?

Q: Is there a design style that you like and want to incorporate?

A: I love Mid Century Modern, but maybe a softer side of that, I want it to feel cozy but fresh at the same time.

Q: Will you use the guest room for any other purpose?

A: I would like to store extra clothes in there, like sweaters in a couple of drawers and maybe some things in the closet that I don’t often wear.

Q: Anything else that you want me to know that is important for the design and use of the guest room.

A: I want to have window treatments for sure!  I also want it to be a bit more on the feminine side but I don’t want my friends husbands to feel like they are sleeping in a “girly pink room”.  I want a little bit of artwork but I don’t want it to feel cluttered.  I want it to feel cozy, serene and comfortable.

Kim had a few pictures of things that she likes to illustrate her thoughts – not necessarily things she wants to use but just things she likes so I have a sense of her style.

I noticed that one of the photos that she liked was from Room and Board.  We have a showroom in Boston so we decided to go there first to see what we could find.

Kim decided on the Hartley Bed from Room and Board upholstered in their Vance Rose Velvet.  A nod to the blush that she was looking for but in a more muted tone giving it the desired, more neutral effect.  Having decided on the bed, we had a great time choosing multiple items from Room and Board to complete her look.  You can see all of the choices on the mood board below.  We also found some great ready- made curtains from Crate and Barrel and the perfect creamy grasscloth wallpaper from Cowtan and Tout.

Boston Guest Room – Room and Board inspired

Everything in this picture came to $15,200.  That includes delivery and sales tax for Boston.  The wallpaper installation was an additional charge.  If you want to lower the cost a bit, you could paint instead of wallpaper, use different artwork and a different mirror – these changes would save you almost $4,000.

Kim will be hosting her guests in style this holiday season.
